RC Program: EEP/Transition School
Graduating Class: 1997
Major: Biochemistry
Discipline: Natural Sciences
Current Location: Bellingham, WA
Region: Seattle Area
Current Job/Career:
Physician, Obstetrics and Gynecology. I’m the medical director for our 10-provider practice. I never expected to end up as a physician or an OB/GYN or in administration. I went from UW into an MD/PhD program planning on doing medical research. That led to residency, with a thought to transition back to research later. Now, I’m more firmly in practice while raising children and letting my wife finish school. Research? Still in the back of my mind, and always possible to go back to later.
Graduate School:
Yes, PhD in Biochemistry at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. I worked on the structure and enzymology of a DNA methyltransferase called RsrI. Structural studies used x-ray crystallography. I also was a graduate teaching assistant during this time, helped edit a book of supplemental problems to a textbook, and helped write grants, so I’ve seen a broad range of academia.
Other Interests:
I enjoy playing games, playing with my three kids, hiking, biking, camping, traveling.
If you could give yourself a superpower, what would it be?
I’ve always wanted to be able to throw fireballs. I’m not sure that I’d have the needed maturity to go along with that, though.
