Our Saturday Enrichment Program still has spaces available in our Poetry and the Political class. This course, for 6th-8th graders, is an introduction to poetry and poetic form dealing with questions of power. Students will discover the art of reading poetry through the practice of close reading for diction, genre, style, rhythm, figurative language, and poetic device. Together we will ask: what is political about the work? What are the social and historical circumstances that shape the poem and encircle its context? What does poetry allow us to say that other forms of prose do not? How does poetic form and formal experimentation explode our political imaginary? Students will read a variety of poems and learn by experience as they write poems of their own. To see all of our Saturday Enrichment courses for Winter session, which begins January 12th, click here.
