Jean Lutgen is a proud native Seattlite, attended Seattle Public Schools, earned both her B.A. in Mathematics and Professional Teaching Certificate from Seattle Pacific University. She lives with her husband Bill, near Roosevelt High School where she has taught math for 20 years. Jean says, “What drew me to teaching initially was the prospect of sharing my interest in applied mathematics. As a teacher, I get to continually rediscover what it means to learn mathematics, from my students’ perspectives. Now, as an older teacher, I am attracted to the vibrancy I feel from my students in the classroom. Summer Stretch gives me the opportunity to work with a select group of young scholars who show the interests and abilities to complete an entire year’s coursework in a single month. I am looking forward to my 20th Summer Stretch!”
