John Benner is a doctoral candidate in learning sciences and human development. His academic interests include designing equitable and engaging learning environments and family engagement in learning. Prior to attending the University of Washington, he was a Reggio-inspired childcare center director and managed after-school enrichment programs at South Shore P-8. He’s been obsessed with the game of mancala since he was a preschool teacher and is continually inspired by what students of all ages (even adults!) can learn through play. John’s educational philosophy is best summed up by “take what’s fun and dig into the learning hiding there.” John is also an aikido instructor and a bass player.
