Nicholas Durant has always had an affinity for reading fiction and fantasy. In graduate school, he discovered his super power of listening to research articles and lived experiences with the aid of accommodations such as text to speech apps, audio books, and podcasts. He particularly enjoys text layering, which includes discovering research rabbit holes of information (books, online articles, research papers, audiobooks, podcasts, videos and social media) to further understand his topics of interest – which led to an exploration of the representation of subcultures in the zine community. Nicholas recently graduated from the University of Washington with a Masters in Education and has worked as a special education educator for six years. He is interested in fostering inclusion in learning spaces, offering windows and mirrors in texts and artifacts while engaging in research, and providing a safe space where learners’ languages are used to communicate ideas to build community (including ASL and AAC).
