What is Summer Stretch?

Summer Stretch offers both accelerated courses (e.g. Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, Precalculus, Chemistry) and courses for enrichment (e.g. American Literature, Speech and Debate, Physics of Robotics). All of these courses provide an in-depth, intensive learning experience.

Summer Stretch 2020 will begin on June 29th and end on July 30th. Students attend three days a week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday) from 9:00 AM – 2:20 PM. Please note that due to COVID-19, Summer 2020 courses will now be delivered in an online format. Classes are small and instructors are all specialists in their field. Students must be committed to a substantial homework load; courses are graded and final transcripts are provided.

If  students would like school credit for their Summer Stretch course, they MUST obtain permission from their school counselor or principal in advance; the Robinson Center does not grant high school credit for Stretch courses. It is the decision of each individual school and district as to whether a Summer Stretch course qualifies for school credit/placement.

How to Apply

Registration for Summer Stretch 2020 will begin at 4:00 PM on Sunday, February 2nd and close at 5:00 PM on June 1st. Students must currently be in the 7th-10th grades (the 2019-2020 school year) when they register. Not all classes are open to all grades. Because classes tend to fill quickly, students may choose up to three of their top course preferences during registration. However, students are only accepted into one class.

Applicants need to complete the online application and submit appropriate documentation to qualify for admission to the program. Applications are only considered complete after documentation has been submitted.

Pathways to Qualify for a Summer Stretch Math Class

Stretch applicants qualify by submitting documentation for ONE of the following:

  • Smarter Balanced (SBAC) scores or other standardized test (ITBS, SSAT, SCAT, CoGAT, ERB) scores in the 90th percentile or above in the quantitative section. For your reference, the minimum qualifying SBAC scores for tests taken the spring of 2019 are as follows:
    • 6th Grade test:  Math 2673
    • 7th Grade test:  Math 2702
    • 8th Grade test:  Math 2733
  • SAT or ACT scores in the 50th percentile or better in the quantitative section
  • Letter of recommendation from a current math teacher who can speak to the student’s ability to succeed in the specific math class for which the student has applied. If you are using a teacher’s recommendation to qualify for a math class, you will be prompted to provide a name and e-mail address during registration. The teacher recommendation form will automatically be e-mailed to the instructor.

Pathways to Qualify for All Other Summer Stretch Classes

Stretch applicants qualify by submitting documentation for ONE of the following:

  • Enrollment in an identified gifted/highly capable program that specifically serves highly capable students. Acceptable documentation is a letter of placement or report card in a gifted program or school.
  • Qualification to participate in a nationally-recognized talent search (Johns Hopkins CTY, Davidson Institute, etc.)
  • Participation in the Rainier Scholars program
  • Smarter Balanced (SBAC) scores or other standardized test (ITBS, SSAT, SCAT, CoGAT, ERB) scores in the 90th percentile or above in at least one subject area. For your reference, the minimum qualifying SBAC scores for tests taken the Spring of 2019 are as follows:
    • 6th Grade test:  ELA 2661, OR Math 2673
    • 7th Grade test:  ELA 2699, OR Math 2702
    • 8th Grade test:  ELA 2710, OR Math 2733
  • SAT or ACT scores in the 50th percentile or better in at least one subject area
  • Letter of recommendation from a teacher who can speak to the student’s ability to succeed in the program. If you are using a teacher’s recommendation to qualify for the program, you will be prompted to provide a name and e-mail address during registration. The teacher recommendation form will automatically be e-mailed to the instructor.
  • Previous enrollment in our Summer Challenge or Summer Stretch program

Documentation must be uploaded to your account. It can be in the form of a screenshot, photo, PDF, or jpeg.

To meet projected enrollment demands, we sometimes offer multiple sections of classes. Please note that if you register for a class that has multiple sections (designated Section A or Section B), if there is no space left in the section you are requesting, we will automatically put you in the other section of the same class. The core content is the same across sections, although teachers may approach it differently based on their areas of expertise.

Applications are accepted on a rolling, first-come first-served basis. Complete applications are processed first. Waiting lists are created for classes that fill. Classes that are under-enrolled may be canceled.

Cost and Financial Aid

Tuition for 2020 is $1,000 for the five weeks plus a materials & excursion fee of $75 – $100, depending on the class. There is a non-refundable $50 registration fee.

Robinson Center Summer Programs Refund Policy (Updated due to COVID-19)

You may withdraw by written (email) request only. The last day to withdraw and receive a full refund is May 15th. If the request is received no later than May 15th, you will receive a 100% refund. Tuition cannot be refunded after the deadline. If we are not able to put a Stretch course online this summer, it will be canceled and you will receive a full refund.

Tuition and Fee Waivers

Tuition and fee waivers may be awarded to families who are eligible for or are receiving free or reduced lunch.

Documentation accepted as evidence of need includes copies of 2018 or 2019 1040-tax forms OR 2019-20 documentation of eligibility for free/reduced lunch. The document/s may be submitted through the ‘Make a Payment’ page of your Robinson Center account. Providing this information will not disadvantage you. If supporting paperwork is not submitted, or if there is a significant discrepancy between the information submitted online and the confirmatory documents, the tuition and fee waiver may be rescinded and/or the student may be removed from the class.

Information supplied to the Robinson Center is intended for internal use only. It is understood that this information will be used only in computing the amount of financial assistance for which the student may qualify, and that it will not be released to any other party.

Scholarships

The following is a non-inclusive list of organizations that grant scholarships to students wishing to attend summer programs.

The Assistance League of Seattle provides scholarships for summer enrichment programs available to Seattle Public School children, grades 6th to 11th.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation provides scholarships for exceptional students who have demonstrated, through academic excellence and extracurricular activities, that they have the potential to excel. The foundation serves students from families with limited income (the family income may not exceed $95,000).

The Washington Association of Educators of the Talented and Gifted awards scholarships to students who plan to attend a summer program at a college or at a similarly challenging summer camp.

Program Schedule

Summer Stretch classes run from 9:00 AM to 2:20 PM on Monday, Tuesday,  and Thursday.  There is no before- or after-class care for Summer Stretch; students are welcome to use the Robinson Center in Guggenheim Annex as a place to study before or after class. The Center opens at 8:00 AM and closes at 4:30 PM. All students must arrive at their assigned classrooms by 9:00 AM, where attendance will be taken by the teaching team. Families must report a student’s absence by emailing the teacher at the teacher’s UW email address and copying the Robinson Center at rcsummer@uw.edu prior to 8:30 AM.

Information for the First Day

Before classes begin, we will send you all of the information and supplies you need for the first day of Summer Stretch. Information for the first day of the 2020 session will be emailed in mid-June.

Appeal Process

If a student was not accepted into the program and would like to appeal that decision, parents have a week to submit an appeal. If you wish to appeal, please log into your account, where there is a link to an appeal form. Once the appeal has been completed and submitted, and the required documents uploaded to your account, the Admissions team will reconsider your application and, if necessary, forward the appeal to the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Academic Affairs, which has the final word on all appeals.

Summer News

UW is not allowing in-person classes through Summer Session A, which coincides with the dates of our summer programs. We have, with much sadness, decided to cancel our Summer 2020 Challenge Program. The uniqueness of the Summer Challenge experience is the hands-on nature of our instruction, the student interactions that take place, and the community that is created in the classrooms. We could not replicate that in an online format.

The Summer Stretch Program, which is more academic in nature, lends itself to online classes. All of our Summer Stretch classes will be taught online this year. Stretch instructors are currently working to restructure their classes for the online format. Although the format is changing, the content will remain the same. Note that grades will be pass, fail, or incomplete, rather than letter grades. Families will have through May 15 to withdraw their child from the program, with a full tuition refund.
