Calling all future poets, musicians, painters, and artists of all kinds! Across history, humans have always created artwork about nature. From Coast Salish carvings of orcas, to Vincent Van Gogh’s painted sunflowers, to ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs of falcons, people use art to express their feelings and ideas about nature. Add your own works of art to this amazing tradition! No prior artistic experience is needed.
Each week, students hear a musical piece inspired by nature as they experiment with artistic media including watercolor, pen, collage and mixed media, and sculpture. They also use science and literary connections, nature walks, and journaling and drawing practice to help express their ideas about nature. Students learn about artistic decision-making and how to create their own beautiful works of art featuring subjects from nature, including fossils, trees, animals, clouds, flowers, bones, and more! During the 9-week course, students create many beautiful artworks and work together to create a beautiful illustrated book about nature. On our final class meeting, families are invited to celebrate these students’ hard work and hear the class read their book aloud and share their illustrations.
