Course Description

Why do some objects float while others sink? What makes certain materials strong enough to hold weight while others bend, stretch, or break? And what surprising discoveries are hiding in the everyday materials around us? In Mystery Materials Lab, young scientists will investigate the fascinating properties of ordinary objects through hands-on experiments, playful challenges, and plenty of unexpected discoveries. With curiosity as their guide, students will explore how materials behave and discover that even the simplest objects can hold some pretty surprising secrets!

Through collaborative investigations and creative experiments, students will explore how different materials interact with water, respond to forces, and perform in simple design challenges. They'll make predictions, test their ideas, compare results, and explore what happens when things don't go as expected. Along the way, students will practice thinking like scientists and engineers, discovering that experimentation isn't always about getting the right answer, but about asking questions, trying new approaches, and learning from every discovery.

Essential Questions

  • What can we discover about everyday materials by observing, experimenting, and testing them?
  • How do the properties of different materials affect what they can do and how we use them?
  • How can we use what we discover, including unexpected results, to solve problems and try new ideas?

Weekly Breakdown

Week 1 Water Wonders!
What happens when everyday materials meet water? Young scientists will investigate how different materials float, sink, absorb, or repel water through hands-on experiments and playful challenges, making predictions, testing their ideas, and exploring surprising results along the way.
Week 2 Built to Last?
What makes some materials stronger, sturdier, or more flexible than others? Students will explore how different materials respond to bending, stretching, and weight before putting their discoveries to work in a creative building challenge where they'll design, test, and improve their ideas.
